Men of a Certain Age

This week I am focusing on gentlemen. Gentlemen of a certain movie age that is. I chose three different actors from the Hollywood glamour age: Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant, and Jimmy Stewart. These actors are such classic men. I revamped some classic cocktails to represent them. The first will be Mister Spencer Tracy

Spencer Tracy cocktail

Whiskey cocktail

Spencer Tracy is the classic Irish gentleman to me. From his performance in Guess who's coming to dinner to all his rom coms with Katherine Hepburn to his westerns, Tracy was a classic actor. He was a strong presence. This cocktail has a strong presence too: the hit of Irish whiskey is mixed with the sweetness of lemon juice and cherry liqueur. The cocktail is a twist on the whiskey sour.

Ingredients

2 oz Irish whisky

1/2 oz Luxardo cherry liqueur

1 oz Meyer lemon juice

Garnish: large ice cube

Recipe: In a shaker with ice, pour irish whisky, luxardo cherry liqueur, and Meyer lemon juice. Shake until cold. Pour into a rocks glass with large ice cube.

Cary Grant cocktail

Gin cocktail

Cary Grant is one of the many gents that I remember from my childhood. One of my favorite movies that my mom and I watched together, The Philadelphia Story, stars Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart (the next gentleman). Cary Grant always plays up the suave and charming gentleman in romantic comedies and dramas. He always appealed to me because of his sense of humor and charm. This cocktail is inspired by his classic charm: gin mixed with a little lime, ginger, and vermouth. The mix is something that is balanced and not sweet but smooth.

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Ginger liqueur

1/2 oz Dry Vermouth

1 oz Lime juice

1/2 oz simple syrup

Garnish: Lime Peel

Recipe: In a cocktail shaker with ice, pour gin, ginger liqueur, dry vermouth, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake until cold. Pour into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime peel.

Jimmy Stewart cocktail

Whiskey cocktail

Obviously this gif is from The Philadelphia Story, I couldn't help it! Jimmy Stewart is so charming in the role. He didn't do many comedies in his acting career but he had a major presence. His tall and thin frame gave him a physical presence that could charm or terrify you. I liked to watch him in his various roles and always fell for his beautiful blue eyes. This cocktail is all about falling in love. A strong hit of whiskey meets with the sweetness of strawberry and orange. It goes down easy but also can hit you if you aren't paying attention.

Ingredients

2 oz Bourbon Whiskey

1/2 oz Strawberry liqueur

1 oz Orange juice

Garnish: Orange slice

Recipe: In a mixing glass, pour whiskey, strawberry liqueur, whiskey barrel bitters, and orange juice. Stir. Pour into a rocks glass with a large ice cube and muddled orange slice.
